Tote vs. Crossbody vs. Shoulder Bag

How to Actually Know Which One You Need

Most women own at least one of each. And most women have, at some point, grabbed the wrong one for the day and paid for it. Too small for the school run. Too big for the night out. Too open for the crowded subway.

The bag you carry isn't just a style decision but it’s a practical one. Knowing which silhouette actually fits your life - your daily load, your schedule, your comfort threshold - makes a bigger difference than most people realize.

The Tote

What it's built for

The tote is the workhorse bag. It fits everything: a laptop, a change of clothes, a packed lunch, your kid's snacks, a spare pair of shoes. If you need to be prepared for the full day from the moment you leave the house, a tote is how you do that. It doesn't require careful packing or editing. You fill it and go.

It works for commuting to the office, long days of errands, school pickups, day trips with the family, remote work days where your whole setup travels with you. Anywhere life asks a lot of you before you've had a chance to catch your breath.

The real issues

The problems with totes are well-documented by anyone who carries one regularly. They get heavy. The straps dig into your shoulder. And because the inside is essentially one big open space, the small things you need most disappear like your keys, lip balm, even a last minute tampon. You end up fishing around at the bottom of a bag that's actively working against you.

Over time, a tote without structure starts to lose its shape. A slouchy, overstuffed bag is hard to keep looking pulled-together. They're also not ideal for evenings out or situations where you want to carry the bare minimum - a large tote for dinner just feels like you never went home.

The totes we carry

The Eliana Tote is the quintessential work tote. It comes in black and biscotti, both in pebbled leather, and it's built to carry your full day without looking like it. Electronics fit easily without the bag stretching out of shape. The straps are adjustable and include strap pads for heavier loads, so your shoulder doesn't take the hit. A key leash keeps your keys findable. And a removable nylon organizer gives everything inside a place - cosmetics, medication, feminine products, cards - so nothing ends up loose at the bottom.

The Jordan Bucket Bag is the mid-size option, and the most structured tote we make. It stands on its own, which already solves one of the most common tote frustrations. It comes with two strap attachments - a leather crossbody strap and a fabric shoulder strap - both designed to stay comfortable regardless of load. Flat exterior pockets run along the sides, perfect for your phone, receipts, or anything you reach for constantly. A security hook closes the bag at the top. The Jordan also includes the nylon organizer, so the inside stays organized even on your most chaotic days.

The Jolina is THE bucket tote - but thoughtfully designed so it doesn't become a black hole. A magnetic closure at the top keeps things from falling out when the bag tips. There's an interior pocket at the base for your phone or wallet. A key leash. A nylon organizer. Two strap options - leather and fabric. It fits everything a full day asks for, with a little more intention built in. You can read more about the Jolina Bucket Tote’s features and all the places you can go with it, here

The Crossbody Bag

What it's built for

The crossbody is for when you want to move. It sits close to the body, leaves your hands free, and carries only what you actually need, which, on a lot of days, is everything. It's lighter than a tote, easier to keep track of, and more secure in crowded or unfamiliar places. For anyone who finds large bags exhausting, or who prefers a cleaner silhouette, a crossbody feels like a relief.

It's the right call for concerts, city days with a lot of walking, nights out where you don't want to be weighed down, errand runs, and even school pickups when you're doing a quick swap and heading back out.

The real issues

Crossbodies have trade-offs. They don't fit much, which can be a dealbreaker on days you just need to carry more. A lot of them lean casual - nylon crossbodies read very differently than leather ones, and the difference shows. Pockets are often either nonexistent, disorganized or in over-abundance. And some straps are stiff, narrow, or barely adjustable, which negates most of the comfort benefit.

The crossbody bags we carry

Worth noting first: Every bag in the AALLYN collection can be worn as a crossbody. The totes all come with crossbody strap attachments, and the satchels include an extra strap specifically for that. You don't have to commit to one silhouette.

That said, the Ingrid is our dedicated crossbody. It's structured, stands on its own, holds its shape, and looks polished with just about anything. Hidden pockets on the interior and front panel keep your phone, cards, and small items organized without requiring you to dig. It comes with both a thin and a thick strap depending on what you prefer. A magnetic clasp secures the front flap. It also functions as a shoulder bag, so if crossbody isn't your preference, you have the option.

The Elara Convertible Bag is a three-in-one: handheld, shoulder, or crossbody. It comes with two strap attachments and a long strap extender, and switching between them is easy - the hardware is secure but not fussy. Worn crossbody, it fits close to the body. Carried by the top handle, the silhouette shifts into a unique curved shape similar to a fortune cookie. The zipper is thick and smooth. It's a good option for anyone who wants one bag that can change how it wears depending on the day.

The Shoulder Bag

What it's built for

The shoulder bag is the default. Most women reach for it without giving it much thought because it's accessible, familiar, and works with almost everything. Shoulder bags vary the most in size and shape, which means the category spans everything from a soft hobo to a structured satchel. What they have in common is that they sit on the side of the body, easy to reach into, not strapped across the chest.

They work essentially everywhere: work, errands, casual days, travel. It's the least specialized silhouette, which is both the appeal and the limitation.

The real issues

Because shoulder bags rest on one side, they can get uncomfortable fast when they're heavy. The bag shifts, the strap digs in, and by the end of a long day you feel it in your neck and shoulder. A bag that's lost its shape or looks worn also shows more in a shoulder carry as it's right there, visible in your full outfit. And unlike a crossbody that wraps close to the body, a shoulder bag hangs open to one side, which makes you more conscious of security in busy spaces.

The shoulder bags we carry

Every bag in our collection can be worn on the shoulder - including our satchels such as the Lilly, which comes with both a thin and thick strap attachment so you can choose what sits better on your body.

The Marley Hobo is designed specifically with the shoulder carry in mind. The strap adjusts easily using metal snaps which makes getting the right length in seconds. The pebbled leather is soft and develops a lived-in quality over time rather than looking worn out. The zipper is thick and smooth. A key leash keeps your keys from disappearing. Two interior side pockets offer security for things you want to keep separate: a passport, cards, anything you don't want loose in the main compartment.

So Which One Do You Actually Need?

Probably more than one, at different points in the week. The tote for the days in your life is a lot. The crossbody for the nights it isn't. The shoulder bag if you can’t decide between the two.

The more useful question is: which silhouette is doing the most work for you right now, and is it actually built well enough to do it?

If any of this feels familiar, you can shop the bags mentioned here directly. The Eliana, Jordan, and Jolina for tote days. The Ingrid and Elara for crossbody. The Marley and Lilly for shoulder carry. All of them come with the straps, the organization, and the durability to hold up, so you stop thinking about your bag and start just using it.

About the brand

AALLYN was created from a simple idea: handbags should be beautiful, practical, and easy to live with. After years of working closely with bags and listening to what women needed, we set out to design pieces that feel good to carry, look effortless, and hold up to everyday life.

We believe in balance. Soft and structured, refined and relaxed, stylish and usable. Every silhouette is designed to be worn multiple ways, to move with you from season to season, and to feel like a natural part of your routine instead of something you have to work around.

Each collection is built with intention, made in small batches, and shaped by real life. From thoughtful convertibility to everyday comfort, every detail is created with women and the way they live at the center.
